Prevention and Deterrence1

1Prevention involves programs and services available to victims and offenders that aim to decrease the number of new cases of assault or abusive behavior, reduce the risk of death or disability from violence, and extend life after a violent event; deterrence involves the use of sanctions to prevent offenders from using violence.

This chapter reviews research on prevention and deterrence efforts undertaken at various levels of government and by private organizations to reduce violence against women. It also identifies research needed to better understand what does and does not work in preventing and deterring these violent behaviors.
